Carnivore, Herbivore & Omnivore?

Nov 13, 2019 · Leave a Comment

I thought for quite a while about how I should categorize recipes on this website.  With BBQ as the focus, I was thinking meat types would be best.  Beef, Pork, Poultry, Fish, etc...  That sounds great and all, but it leaved fruit and vegetables out.  Some of our favorite things that we cook are fruits and vegetables (especially on our Big Green Egg).  Adding vegetables after all of those different meat categories seemed to marginalize vegetables too much.

Nobody puts cauliflower in the corner, either.

Anyways, I went to school for Wildlife Ecology and Conservation...and when I think of animal feeding strategies I think of Carnivores, Herbivores, and Omnivores.  People can be similarly categorized...so I thought it was a perfect way to categorize our recipes.

Carnivore
car·ni·vore     /ˈkärnəˌvôr/    noun
an animal that feeds on flesh.
Recipes in this category will feature MEAT
Herbivore
her·biv·ore     /ˈ(h)ərbəˌvôr/    noun
an animal that feeds on plants.
Recipes in this category will feature FRUITS, VEGETABLES, FUNGI, ETC (Vegetarian or Vegan dishes)
Omnivore
om·ni·vore     /ˈämnəˌvôr/      noun
an animal or person that eats food of both plant and animal origin.
Recipes in this category will feature a COMBINATION
I may find it confusing/difficult to differentiate between Carnivore and Omnivore recipes...but I think the Carnivore recipes will concentrate mostly on tradiational BBQ and probably sous vide (because I love sous vide)...basically cooking hunks of meat, while the Omnivore recipes will feature more traditional recipes.
Lets see how it works!
(Speaking of omnivores...this is a great book.  I just realized I can do some great book reviews here, too!  https://www.amazon.com/Omnivores-Dilemma-Natural-History-Meals/dp/0143038583 )
